December 2026: the deadline is already set
The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) applies from 30 December 2026 for medium and large companies, and from 30 June 2027 for micro and small companies. It requires geolocation of the plot of origin, risk assessment and a due diligence statement in order to place timber on the EU market.
It's not just Europe. The United States requires species and origin declarations under the Lacey Act, and China's forestry law bans the purchase and transport of illegally sourced timber. All three markets essentially ask for the same thing: where this log came from and under what permit.
Traceability can't be improvised in a few months. Either the data is captured from the forest, or it doesn't exist.

Nearly thirty years in production, not a promise
I've been developing software for the forestry industry since 1997. The suite has been running continuously in the Republic of Congo since 2006 and in Cameroon since 2013. Both companies are OLB certified (Origin and Legality of Timber, Bureau Veritas), in 2022 and 2026 respectively.
The Congo system was built from the start with traceability and certification as a requirement, not as an afterthought. That's why it has been capturing the GPS position of every log for twenty years — exactly the track record the industry is now racing to rebuild.
Behind it are nearly thirty years on the ground in Ivory Coast, the Republic of Congo and Cameroon, including several years as head of IT development for an Italian timber group with two mills and an export office. I've designed, developed and maintained the software myself.
